Environmental Impact Assessment Of Quarry Activities In Oba-Ile Ondo State, Nigeria
Publication Authors:

Year Published:
 2015
Abstract:

The study was carried out to assess the environmental impact of quarry activities in Oba-Ile, Ondo State, Nigeria. Structured questionnaire and field observations was administered to elucidate data on socio-economic characteristics of the residents; vibration effects; building damages; health effects and impact of quarry activities on the environment among others. The study also employed ArcGIS software to determine the extent of land area that is affected by pollution as a result of the quarry activities in the study area. The research also made use of IKONOS imagery for Geographical Information Systems GIS) to buffer and extract buildings that are within 3km radius. Results obtained show that most buildings that fall within buffer zone to quarry site have high risk such as air pollution, noise pollution and health effects. The Study recommended total relocation for the residents of the study to reduce health risk problems.

Abstract:

The study identified and assessed the impact of shorelines changes on Victoria Island in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria. Data were collected through the instrumentality of structured questionnaires. There were 3248 buildings in the study area which constitute the research population. The sample size of 10% was adopted, hence 325 copies of questionnaires was administered in the study. Data for shoreline changes were obtained from satellite imagery. Topographical map of 1962 was used as the base map; Landsat TM of 1984, ETM+ 2000 and 2011 of Eti-Osa were acquired for this study respectively. The study employed maximum likelihood supervised classification method using ILWIS 3.1 and ArcGIS 9.3. The topographic map of 1962 and the imagery of 1984 was glued and crossed; 1984 and 2000; and the 2000 and 2011 were also crossed to get the changes in the shorelines in these years. The results of the analysis revealed that between 1962 and 1984 there was loss in landmass while between 1984 and 2011 there was increase in land gain overtime. In our opinion, the information provided by these technologies can significantly improve strategic decision-making processes in shoreline changes worldwide.

On The Use Of Control Features For Rectification Of Satellite Images
Publication Authors:

Year Published:

Abstract:

The identification of Ground Control Points on satellite images is sometimes a difficult task in the rectification of these images. The use of control features has been suggested as an alternativeor, in some cases, to supplement control points, since the identification of linear features such as roads and rail tracks is generally easier than that of points on satellite images. The usefulness of this concept for polynomial rectification SPOT image subscene is examined in this study. Results are compared with those obtained by using control points only.

TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING FROM SATTELITE IMAGES: HOW FEASIBLE IN DEVELOPING
Publication Authors:
 G. E. Ajayi
Year Published:
 1992
Abstract:

With the availability of high-resolution Landsat TM and SPOT images, space images are considered as being suitable for the production of medium scale topographic maps. This should be very useful, particularly in developing countries, where the need for revision of the existing maps is very urgent. The usability of SPOT imagery for the map revision of an area in Nigeria is examined in this study. An assesment of the interpretability of some cultural features such as roads and settlements isdone. Few of the problems which may make the operational use of satellite images for mapping in most developing countries difficult are discussed.
